The Ceramic Process

Picture
A lot of people often ask about the ceramic process. In fact, there are a lot of stages. Below is what is called the greenware stage, where the clay is still wet. After it has been sculpted into its desired form, as seen on the left, it is left to dry before a  bisque firing.

Once the clay is bisque fired, it becomes hard and often changes color.  My clay turns white, as seen on the face. The piece is now ready to glaze.  I often think this is the most difficult part, because you never know what the glazes are going to do and they colors are often very different when fired. Once the glazes are painted on, the piece can be fired a second time. This process brings out the intended color of the glaze.

Once you complete your glaze firing, your piece is ready. This particular piece is composed of many different tiles, so I had to assemble, grout and frame. Easy right?
